What does the element of light represent for you?
Well, as I’m called Lucia, I would say it is the essence of life and being. Light is absolutely essential for me and for my mental balance.
What do you associate the term illumination with?
As a sympathiser of the Tibetan Buddhist philosophy Dzogchen (in other words, the highest and definitive path towards illumination), I associate this term with freedom, balance and deep soul-searching to proceed in the profound knowledge of self-liberation.
Please tell us to what measure and in which manner light has influenced and influences your life, ideas, and emotions.
I’m a meteoropathic person, I really suffer the lack of sun and light… I have my own way of describing my mood during rainy days, I compare it to taking a dive into a pool wearing a heavy woollen coat. Light is essential; it shows you things clearly, I can even use a more profound metaphor… I decided to undergo some therapy with Sara Roveraro, a magnificent therapist, who took my hand and literally helped me to flick the switch, allowing me finally to see all the rubbish I had stacked away in my soul from the time I was born and to acquire a lucidity that is definitely helping me to stick to a straight path.
In a more tangible manner, I find that appropriate lighting, at home or in a public venue for example, is important for creating the right atmosphere. Personally, I love warm light, I’m not a fan of cold tones or of white or coloured neons either. I go crazy for Christmas fairy lights, in warm tones of course, and not coloured, I have them scattered around my house the whole year round.
How much does light or the metaphor of illumination influence your work as a stylist?
The concept of illumination/intuition is fundamental for the creative process and in the construction of the image of the artist concerned.
Could you, in your way, using your own language, describe to us the concept of illumination? What bond is forged between stylist and artist?
Obviously it depends on the artist, but I would say that a close bond is formed, based on trust and empathy. Personally, without these elements I have great difficulty in finding the right ‘illumination’ to build the image of a singer/musician.
“We need to be ‘illuminated’ creatively and socially”. Where do you think this metaphor finds its expression?
I realise that I am being out-dated but I don’t much like social media, I understand its usefulness but I find this moment in history is very limited and limiting despite the speed of these mediums. I think that there is much ignorance, a lack of healthy curiosity and a great deal of laziness in the search for illumination on one’s own path. It is all too superficial, frequently based on appearance (often of poor quality)… I prefer concerts, reading, cinema and social closeness.
In these times of total closure, I realise that the thing that I miss the most is intermingling with people.
I miss my hour at the bar in the morning, it’s when I establish relationships that very often result in work and creative collaborations.
In effect, I think that there is need for greater soul-searching to be able to develop creative and social illumination, to welcome otherness, because recognising difference is growth and growth is illumination.
This time for me is a moment of flux, of important change.
I feel that many aspects of my life don’t belong to me anymore, I don’t feel comfortable with certain mechanisms anymore, which of course, I don’t reject, but I feel restricted by them now. I always liked being behind the scenes and organising. I have learnt to recognise my skills, and now I would like to follow the other passion I’ve had since childhood: photography. So I have begun to get involved with creative production, working with professional photographer friends.
I have founded a small production house, VV9, that engages in creative production and, slowly, slowly, I am beginning to collaborate with historic Italian and international brands. I would like travel even more, I’m sure that the many contacts that I have created during my 30-year career will help me to shorten the distances along this path of mine.
